More on Gaining Clarity
By Steve Sjogren | May 30, 2006
I hope you enjoy the blog entry today and yesterday – this is stuff I normally charge big bucks for… So why am I giving this away to you at no cost? The clarity of vision is one of the main issues that prevents forward progress.
This lack of clarity will prevent us from putting our heart, soul, strength and mind into our unique work. If we don’t know what we are to be about, we will end up saying “yes” to far too many things and our energies will be disbursed in many non-strategic directions.
The first line of Jim Collins’ book From Good to Great is “Good is the enemy of great.” That statement has been made by many, but it deserves to be repeated many more times.
On a very practical note…
Go out today and buy a digital recorder. I have found that Office Depot has the best prices and the largest selection. The largest manufacturer of these devices is Olympus. They start at $40 and go up to over $100. The one I use costs about $125, but it’s worth it. It is tall and thin and records something like 40 hours of voice notes! What makes it fantastic is that it comes with a cradle – you set it in the cradle, connect the USB cable to your laptop (Windows or Mac) and the contents of your audible files are automatically downloaded in a few seconds onto your hard drive for permanent storage (which if you are a Windows user won’t be very long – just until your next crash! – enough Windows bashing for now…)
If you are really tracking with me, top that off by going to Best Buy and purchase an adhesive clip and belt snap for your recorder so you can carry it with you all the time clipped to your belt. I know, I know you are thinking, “But I’ll look like a geek.” So what. I’ve done this for many years. No one has ever called me a geek! I listen to the band “Phish” after all! No self-respecting geek has even heard of them. Who cares what you look like! You will be prepared for something important.
Unclip your recorder – speak into it what you are hearing, then later capture that onto your laptop in a word processing file or perhaps on your laptop journaling software. Let’s continue tomorrow.
