A Key to Achieving Your Mission: Dogged Determination

By Steve Sjogren | June 14, 2006

Great leaders throughout history have shown us a number of important lessons about how they arrived at their place of being able to make an ongoing contribution. One of the constants in all significant leaders is single-minded persistence in the pursuit of a specific mission. Recently, I was watching one of those behind the scenes network news shows that tells the news at a more in-depth level. The night’s topic was success and how various people attained it. Each person had a unique story, but all had one thing in common – they had a dogged determination that just wouldn’t quit. They kept at the development of their idea or skill until they had risen to the top of their game. Jon Bon JoviOne person featured was Jon Bon Jovi. He spoke with determination about how he had been cursed by teacher after teacher, told that he would never amount to anything, that he had no talent. But he paid no attention to them. The one thing he had going for him that no one can underestimate is sheer grit and determination. To date he has sold over 150 million albums and has played major roles in a number of hit movies. He has been married to his high school sweetheart for twenty-seven years. He is a success in anyone’s book.

    Steve,

While I get the point of the illustration is Bon jovi an example to hold up. I ask for 1 reason alone, your final comment “He is a success in anyone’s book.” May I ask, Is Jon Bon Jovi in the book of life?

From a Bon Jovi fan site:

“…I have also noticed a good deal of Christian/Bibilical references in Bon Jovi’s music and particularly in Jon Bon Jovi’s solo-written songs. I’ve seen and heard many interviews with the man throughout his career and can tell you a few things he’s said about his own faith. He’s never come out and said specifically, “I am a Christian,” but he has specified that he believes in God and prayer. He said in an interview done in 1993 in Philly that he believes in an omnipresent God who is “right here” (pointing to the room around him) and that one does not have to go to church to talk to God (see Bang a Drum lyrics too). In 1995 he discussed writing the These Days record and how blessed he’d been and he used the phrase “God willing, or I should say God, thank you.”

He has also discussed in 1995 his own ponderings about the Catholic religion (how he was raised including time spent in Catholic schools). At the time he was confused over the idea that a baby could go to hell if it had not been christened. He’s referenced belief in heaven and hell in other ways too. You can easily find a knowledge of the Scripture in Jon’s writing just by looking through the lyrics.

Like Jon, Richie and Tico were raised in the Catholic church. David is Jewish and very active in his synagogue. I suppose it might be of some interest to know that Heather has said she was raised Methodist and that’s how she and Richie are raising their daughter…”
