Do the Right Things Instead of Everything
By Steve Sjogren | June 23, 2006
Are you using lots of activity to mask your feelings of not quite measuring up? Have you become a little obsessive-compulsive about attending every committee meeting? Maybe it’s time to lay aside this quest and focus on doing the “right things” instead of “every thing.”
I knew a leader of a large organization, who if you caught him at the right moment would declare this standard of behavior for his fellow leaders: “We need to be people who keep our hands out of the till, our pants zipped up, and are nice to people once in a while.” He would say this with a big smile on his face. Can you think back on some of the leadership scandals of the last ten or fifteen years? Corporate or political leaders, or celebrities who have been on the hot seat? They were living lives of great achievement, yet if they had followed my mentor’s advice, they would have avoided a lot of trouble.
