Introducing Change with Intelligence

By Steve Sjogren | July 4, 2006

When we are introducing change to our organizations it is helpful to simultaneously introduce new vocabulary to go with that change. The principle I have discovered is this: If you don’t apply new ways of explaining the new reality you are ushering in, others who are critical will bring their perspective and will use their explanation(s) or vocabulary to slow down the process.

Take it from me after many years of bringing change — their version of what is happening won’t be accurate about what you are thinking and introducing.

If you have read some of my books, you will notice that I introduce new words continually. It is not that I am a perpetual wordsmith. I am just thinking ahead — trying to introduce change with as much of my personal “spin” and “strategy.”I have a new book coming out in the fall entitled Outflow (Group Publishing). Once again, I am introducing new words that will help leaders, and in this case, whole church congregations who will read this book simultaneously, to introduce new concepts with new words, to accurately usher people into new experiences that will make outreach a doable lifestyle instead of a program that is done for a few weeks and then stopped. I am constantly looking for new ways of explaining the direction we are headed. I encourage you to do the same.
